Replacement reference electrode salt bridge

Restore electrodes with a blocked frit not clearable with cleaning

Without regular cleaning, the ceramic frit on reference electrodes can become blocked. In some cases, this can be cleared by cleaning the electrode with distilled/deionized water. If this fails, you may need to replace the ceramic frit and glass enclosure.

To replace your reference electrode salt bridge:

  • Remove the two black protective caps from the new glass enclosure
  • Gently remove the wire and white plastic cap from your old electrode
  • Prepare your new reference electrode by adding your electrolyte
  • Carefully press-fit the wire and plastic cap into the new glass tube

Take care when handling the delicate glass enclosures. Apply only gentle pressure when removing the wire from your old enclosure or setting up your new reference electrode, and hold your electrodes with a light grip to avoid breakage.

Reference electrode How To Prepare a Reference Electrode

The reference electrode has a white cap which holds the silver or silver/silver chloride wire. The cap is detachable with a gentle force. Hold the glass tube and twist the white cap gently and pull it away from the glass tube. The glass tube is delicate so do not apply a strong force while holding the glass tube.
