Frequently Asked Questions
How do import tariffs work?
Import tariffs, or import duties, are applied at the US border by customs. These are separate to any other clearance fees or taxes, and not something that we are able to control. US customs calculate the tariffs due based on the type of product (e.g. chemical or equipment), where the product originated from, and a number of other factors like whether a free trade agreement applies or whether special duties are due.
Your items will not be released by customs until all applicable import tariffs are paid. We cover these costs on thousands of products across our range, with other import tariffs payable as part of your order. This means that we can ship your items ‘delivered duty paid’ (DDP), which helps your order reach you as quickly as possible and avoids unexpected delivery costs.
Which products have no tariffs to pay and why?
To provide the best possible value to our US customers, we are covering the tariffs on thousands of products which are either made in the UK or by select global partners. This includes our range of UK-made equipment, Luminosyn™ polymers, PEDOT:PSS, and more. Look out for the “no tariffs to pay” label below the product price.
As we have a global supply chain, we are not able to cover these costs for every product. Any such tariffs are calculated at checkout or on quote request and are payable with your order so that there are no unexpected costs on delivery.
Why are the tariffs on my order above the 10% UK rate?
Although we are based in the UK, not all our products fall under the 10% tariff; tariff calculations are complex and depend on both the country of origin of the specific item and its HS code. We are covering the tariffs on thousands of products, but we cannot cover costs for every item due to our global supply chain.
Why are there tariffs to pay during the 90-day pause?
We are reviewing tariff changes as they are announced by The White House and are working hard to keep our systems up to date. Unfortunately, the 90-day pause does not apply in every case.
Why am I being prompted to request a quote for some orders?
Due to the complexity of tariff calculations, you may be prompted to request a quote if your cart total is under $800 and contains items where tariff charges apply. A member of our team will calculate the tariff charges for your order. If you wish to proceed, you can still pay via card or bank transfer as normal.
What if my order includes a mix of covered and non-covered products?
If your order contains both items with and without tariffs to pay, you will only pay tariffs on items whose duties we are not able to cover. Products with the “no tariffs to pay” label will not incur any customs charges. All applicable tariffs for your order will appear as a single line on your quote or invoice.
Please contact us if you would prefer to pay duties on arrival or make your own arrangements.
How do I pay duties and taxes for products that are not covered?
For products where we are not able to cover the import tariffs, you can pay the duties upfront at checkout or via offline channels. These costs are calculated at checkout for orders above $800 or provided upon quote request.
Paying upfront ensures there are no extra fees to pay on delivery. If you prefer to pay duties on arrival or make your own arrangements, please let us know.
Can I choose to ship using my own courier or freight forwarder?
Yes, you can request to use your own shipping account or freight forwarder. In these cases, we won't charge duties upfront and can refund any paid at checkout. Our delivery guarantee does not apply in such cases, and you will be charged any tariffs due when your order clears customs.
Will I receive a customs invoice or bill from the courier?
No. If duties and taxes are paid in advance via our website or team, you should not receive any additional customs invoices or courier bills.
How are duties and import taxes shown?
Any tariffs are costed separately from the product and shipping prices at checkout and will appear as a separate line item on your invoice.
Do import duties and taxes affect shipping?
No, we still offer free shipping on qualifying orders, with premium tracked shipping as standard. Our US delivery guarantee is designed to minimise extra costs and customs surprises.
Is the US Delivery Guarantee available in all 50 states?
Yes, our US Delivery Guarantee applies to all 50 states. Delivery times may vary slightly by location, but the guarantee remains the same.
The tariffs quoted are more/less than I expected
Our online checkout uses a third-party tool to estimate tariffs. Customs duties are complex, and actual amounts may vary. If we over-estimate the charges, you may be eligible for a partial refund as part of our US Delivery Guarantee. Differences may occur between online estimates and those provided by our customer care team.
What happens if there is a delay at US Customs?
Delays at customs are uncommon but can happen. We monitor orders and work to ensure timely arrival. If your order is delayed for inspection, we’ll assist you however we can. If tariffs were paid upfront, we’ll cover any related customs charges.
