Bar Coater Thickness
Bar coater systems use Mayer bar coaters (metal bars with wire-wrapped around them, or bars formed into this shape) to coat a liquid across a large area. The spacing gaps created by the wire determine the wet film thickness.
The relationship between wire diameter and wet film coating thickness is approximately linear. For example, a Mayer bar using a wire with 0.06 mm diameter will produce a wet film thickness of 6 µm, a 0.47 mm bar will produce a 50 µm wet film, up to the 200 µm bar which has a diameter of 1.86 mm. Slight variations in this linear relationship could be due to interactions between the wire bar and coating solution, or the coating solution viscosity/concentration.

Bar Coating Process
Bar coating is a relatively simple technique, allowing users to create uniform large-area thin films. The process can be optimized through variation of the following parameters:
- Bar height and pressure
- Bar speed
- Solution concentration
- Solution viscosity
Using an automated bar coating machine can help improve process consistency and reliability by keeping bar pressure and speed consistent. Some other tips for optimizing your bar coating process include:
- Ensure your substrate and bar coater are clean before coating. Any dirt or debris can cause defects that can run through the entire film.
- Make sure your substrate is held firmly in place during coating. Vacuum stages can be useful for this application as they will hold flexible substrates still, flat and level.
- Use a spirit level to make sure your bar coater machine is level in all directions. This can help maintain unform coating along the desired coating width.
Bar Coater Features
Full Set of Mayer Rods
The Ossila Bar Coater includes a full set of 16 Mayer rods to give you complete flexibility in your coating processes. Ideal for comprehensive coating research, you can explore coating thicknesses from 6 µm to 200 µm. Plus, the system is also compatible many other types of applicator.
Formed or Wire-Wound
Choose between traditional wire-wound or new formed Mayer rods to fit your coating needs. Both achieve highly reproducible films, but formed rods are less prone to damage and contamination with an easily controlled packing density of the grooves.
Large Coating Area
Coat large-area samples, including sheet samples up to A4 size, with this complete bar coating system. With a programmable travel range up to 290 mm, you can also switch out your Mayer bars to vary your coating width because the system accommodates bar widths from 220 mm to 255 mm.
Wide Range of Coating Speeds
Using our tried and tested motorized stage, the bar coater achieves smooth, reliable movement. For coating with a wide range of solution viscosities without forming defects, you can set the speed as low as 0.05 mm.s-1 and up to 250 mm.s-1.
Choose Vacuum or Glass Stage
Mount the drip tray at either end of the system to match the direction of travel and quickly align your samples using the grid-patterned glass plate. You can also choose the vacuum bed stage to secure flexible samples. The quick-lock magnet stage design makes it easy to interchange stages for maximum flexibility.
Compatible Vacuum Pump
The Ossila Diaphragm Vacuum Pump is a perfect vacuum source for the Bar Coater. This pump provides a maximum vacuum of 330 mbar, with low noise (<45 dBA), requires minimal maintenance and has no contamination risk. With an integrated pressure gauge and simple 6 mm push fit connectors, the Vacuum Bed and Vacuum Pump system provides everything you need to start coating large area substrates.
