NMC111 (or NCM111) is a ternary cathode active material with a layered structure and equal composition of nickel, cobalt, and manganese. Due to its low nickel content, these cathodes can tolerate oxygen release caused by the chemical and electrochemical oxidation of the electrolyte, allowing it to withstand potential up to 4.6 V without releasing oxygen. This enables NCM111 to maintain its structural integrity, preventing extensive reconstruction of the cathode surface layer and dissolution of the transition metals for longer battery life spans.
It can also be coated with Al-doped ZnO to mitigate pitting corrosion, cation mixing, and irreversible phase transformation. The coated NMC111 displays higher first discharge capacity at 186 mAh/g (compared to 159 mAh/g for the uncoated) and improved capacity retention of 85% (versus 75% uncoated) after 50 cycles. The coating protects from direct exposure to the electrolyte, preventing the occurrence of phase transformation from trigonal to disordered rock-salt phase.
