Spray Coater Air Atomizing Head Assembly
The Ossila Spray Coater comes with an ultrasonic spray head and an air atomizing head. The air atomizing head works by combining pressurized liquid and gas streams to create a beam of spray droplets that can be directed towards a surface.
The way that liquid and gas streams are combined impacts both the spray shape, the droplet size and distribution.

Internal vs. External Mixing
Internal vs. external mixing refers to whether the spray coating droplets are formed inside or outside the spray coating head. In internal mixing spray heads, the movement of pressurized gas past the liquid reservoir draws solution out, forming an atomized stream.
For external mixing heads, solution is forced out of the spray head nozzle under pressure, creating a small jet of fluid. Pressurized gas is delivered parallel to this liquid jet, just outside the spray coating head.
In the two different designs, there is a distinct difference between how much liquid can be delivered and how this stream is controlled. In an external mixing head, an external pressure gradient is used to drive liquid out of the nozzle, which can be controlled by the user independent gas delivery. However, for the internal mixing heads, the liquid delivery and gas delivery are intrinsically linked.
Nozzle Types
For internal spray heads:
- The standard spray head uses a single outlet port to create a cone-shaped spray.
- For the internal spray heads, you can use multiple holes to create a wider cone in all directions.
- Passing the atomized liquid-gas mixture through a slit creates a fan-shaped spray in one orientation.
For external spray heads:
- The standard spray head uses a single outlet to create a cone of fluid.
- To create a fan, external gas streams can be used to direct the spray flow.
- Changing the angle of these holes changes the shape of the fan.
