Graphite Rod Counter Electrode
Graphite Rod Counter Electrode
Ideal for use in standard electrochemistry cells for cyclic voltammetry, electrolysis and hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs)
Overview | Specifications | Pricing and Options
Graphite rod electrodes serve as the counter electrode in electrochemical reactions. Graphite is a cost-effective alternative to noble metal electrodes. Together with platinum electrodes, they are the most common choice of counter electrodes.
With delocalized electrons that are free to move, graphite provides excellent electrical conductivity. As a non-metal material, graphite significantly cheaper and more earth-abundant than platinum, making it a cost-effective solution for many applications, especially on large-scale uses. Graphite also is chemically inert and high-temperature tolerant, offering a wide range of electrochemical reactions at high temperatures.
However, graphite is a carbon material that is subject to oxidation and corrosion which can lead to graphite particle detachment and by-product diffusion, to poison or deactivate the working electrodes. Also, Compared to platinum, graphite has a more limited stable potential range and often lower catalytic activity for certain reactions.
Graphite rod counter electrode finds applications in standard corrosion test cells, bulk electrolysis and electrosynthesis, battery and energy storage devices and serves as a counter electrode in studies to evaluate the performance of new electrocatalysts for reactions like the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Serving as the anode, i.e. counter electrode for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst evaluation, graphite rod is generally favoured over platinum counter electrode due to the platinum dissolution.

Introduction to Bulk Electrolysis
Unlike many other electrochemical techniques, which are limited to the diffusion layer, bulk electrolysis (sometimes referred to just ‘electrolysis’) changes the composition of the bulk solution. Bulk electrolysis experiments aim to generate a quantitative conversion such that the amount of substrate consumed is directly proportional to the total consumed charge.
