Catholyte Reservoir for MEA Electrolyzers and GDE Flow Cells

A 5-port Electrolyte Reservoir/Tank supporting storage, circulation, ventilation, and in-line monitoring

The Catholyte Reservoir is a 100 mL reservoir designed to circulate catholyte through GDE flow cells and MEA electrolyzer systems. With five ports, it supports simultaneous electrolyte circulation, gas venting, and in-line monitoring, making sure it suited to CO₂RR and other gas-evolving cathode reactions where product gas needs to be safely vented and electrolyte condition monitored in real time.

In extended electrolysis experiments, catholyte composition is possible to drifts due to various reasons as carbonate/bicarbonate species accumulate, pH shifts, and water crosses the membrane from anolyte to catholyte (or vice versa, depending on membrane chemistry). These effects are especially pronounced with AEM and BPM systems, compared to PEM systems, due to tendency of salt precipitation.

The five-port layout allows researchers to track these changes without interrupting the run: a dedicated sampling port supports in-line electrolyte analysis along with periodic pH and conductivity checks, while the separate gas vent keeps evolved cathode products (CO, H₂, or C₂+ hydrocarbons in CO₂RR systems) isolated from the liquid sampling line, avoiding cross-contamination of analytical measurements. This makes the reservoir equally suited to short screening experiments and multi-hour stability tests where catholyte condition is a key variable in interpreting Faradaic efficiency and product selectivity data.

Suggested Port Usage: 1. Catholyte Inlet (return from cell), 2. Catholyte Outlet (to pump/cell), 3. Gas Vent (cathode-evolved gas release, e.g. CO, H₂, hydrocarbons), 4. Sampling Port, 5. Temperature or pH probing
