Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium (CAS number 9004-32-4), commonly known as CMC, is a biodegradable cellulose derivative. Some of the hydroxyl groups in CMC are substituted by sodium carboxymethyl groups, contributing to its water solubility. CMC is a green alternative battery binder, as it does not require organic solvents for processing.

CMC binder introduces a solid permeable interfacial film on the surface of the active cathode material, limiting resistance increase and maintaining the integrity of the electrode. A CMC-sodium vanadium phosphate fluoride electrode exhibits an excellent capacity of 75 mAh/g at high rate of 70 C and long life span of 3500 cycles at 30 C with capacity retention of 79%.

CMC is also used to prepare a sodium thioantimonate (NSS) composite electrolyte. CMC forms a thin encapsulation on the NSS, providing good sodium ion conductance. The encapsulation also acts as a physical barrier to separate NSS from the electrode and moisture, preventing NSS from direct exposure to extreme potentials. Thus, CMC-NSS composite electrolyte promotes the cycling performance of the battery.
