4-Cyano-4''-pentyl-p-terphenyl (CAS 54211-46-0), also known as 5CT, is a cyanoterphenyl analog of the well-known cyanobiphenyl liquid crystal. With the extended rigid core, this material transitions from the crystal phase to the nematic phase at ca. 130 °C and from the nematic to the isotropic phase at around 239 °C, compared with 24 °C and 35.3 °C for 5CB. The elevated nematic range allows 5CT to be used as a high-temperature nematic host or a component in liquid crystal mixtures.
5CT is a component of a room-temperature eutectic nematic liquid crystal mixture E7, which comprises 51 wt% 5CB and 16 wt% 8OCB, together with 21 wt% 7CB and 12 wt% 5CT, or 25 wt% 7CB and 8 wt% 5CT. The E7 liquid crystal mixture has been widely used in LC devices due to its large birefringence (ca. 0.22 in the visible range) and wide nematic temperature range (approximately −10°C to 60°C). Liquid crystals such as E7 have also been explored in biosensing applications, where interactions at the LC/aqueous interface with species such as phospholipids alter molecular alignment and produce a detectable optical signal.
