A fluorinated dianhydride building block

Normally used for the synthesis of polyimides in application of gas separation membranes, solar cells, and low-loss telecommunication

4,4'-(Hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA), CAS number 1107-00-2, has two phthalic anhydrides bridged by a perfluorinated isopropyl group. The electron withdrawing effect from trifluoromethyl groups minimises the electron delocalization of the molecule, and thus the dielectric constant of the synthesized polyimides (dielectric constant 2.33). Such low signal loss polyimides are ideal for telecommunication applications.

The polyimides from 6FDA are popular to use for mixed-matrix membranes. The polyimide matrices provide good dispersion for the fillers and can load up to 50 wt% of the fillers. Those membranes have found their applications in highly selective gas separation (CO2/CH4) and solar cell encapsulation (the power conversion efficiency of Si-based solar cells is enhanced from 14.67% to 15.64%).
