A MOF with zeolite-like topology
with high surface area and rigid structure for gas separation, drug delivery and catalysis
Overview | Product Information | Related Products
Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (CAS number 59061-53-9), commonly known as ZIF-8, is a sub-class of metal organic frameworks (MOFs). ZIF-8 is composed of tetrahedrally coordinated zinc ions with 2-methylimidazole linkers, resembling the zeolite topologies. The strong Zn–N bonds allow ZIF-8 to withstand high temperatures of up to 550 °C under inert atmosphere. The rigid zeolitic network distributes strain evenly, maintaining its highly porous structure. The excellent thermal stability and porosity of ZIF-8 make it suitable for applications such as gas separation, drug delivery and catalysis.
ZIF-8 has shown great potential for olefin gas separation in industrial scale. A ZIF-8 membrane exhibits a C3H6/C3H8 selectivity of 172.1 with C3H6 permeance of 5.9×10−9 mol/m2·s·Pa and stability up to 6 bar.
ZIF-8 is an ideal candidate for drug delivery due to its low toxicity and good biocompatibility. Active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) can be loaded to ZIF-8 through the impregnation method. Subsequently, the release of APIs can be activated by single stimulus for controlled and targeted drug delivery.
