Photoelectrochemical (PEC) H-cell with water bath is a device that allows photocatalytic reactions to convert light energy into chemical energy or electricity.
The cell features two independent, gastight high quality borosilicate glass chambers that are bridged but also well separated by an ion-exchange membrane (e.g., Nafion) to prevent the mixing of anodic and cathodic products from different chambers. The cell allows the optical access with a quartz window (commonly 20-24 mm in diameter) for uniform illumination of the photoelectrode. The integrated water jacket around the gastight chambers enables connection to an external circulating water bath, allowing the temperature to be controlled during the experiment.
This configuration is useful during long-term stability testing where the long exposure to the light source may heat the apparatus altering the kinetics of the electrochemical reaction. The water bath ensures high accuracy and the repeatability of the experiments.
Additionally, it is sometimes necessary to conduct experiments at the elevated temperatures to increase the kinetics of the electrochemical reaction or to achieve a reasonable ion transport across the membrane. The temperature of the cell can be well maintained using a water bath PEC.
