A gas dispersion tube or a bubbler is a slender tube fitted with a sintered glass frit at the tip, used to introduce and disperse gas into the electrolyte as a fine stream of bubbles. The frit breaks the gas flow into small, evenly distributed bubbles, maximising gas-liquid contact area and improving mass transport to and from the electrolyte.
The dispersion tube supports three distinct functions, depending on the experiment:
- Purging: Remove dissolved gases (typically oxygen) from the electrolyte before an experiment begins, using an inert gas such as N₂ or Ar. This is standard practice before HER and OER studies, where dissolved O₂ can interfere with electrode kinetics or introduce background reduction currents.
- Saturation: Pre-equilibrate the electrolyte with a specific reactant gas so its dissolved concentration reaches a known, stable value before measurement begins. This is essential for CO₂RR, where the electrolyte must be CO₂-saturated, and NRR, where N₂ saturation defines the available nitrogen feedstock. Similarly for ORR, where the electrolyte must be O₂-saturated.
- Sparging: A continuous gas flow is maintained throughout the experiment, replenishing gas consumed at the electrode surface and holding a steady dissolved gas concentration during extended CO₂RR, ORR or NRR testing.
Available in two lengths, 45 mm and 60 mm, to accommodate different cell depths and electrode configurations compatible with Ossila Electrochemical Cells and similar products.
