FKM, fluoroelastomer gaskets provide a resilient, elastomeric seal for H-type electrochemical cells operating in acidic, hydrocarbon-exposed, or gas-tight electrolyte environments. Unlike rigid PTFE-based seals, FKM's elastomeric structure provides a stronger compression recovery, maintaining sealing pressure and re-sealing reliably across repeated clamping cycles, making it well suited to applications needing a tight, flexible seal that standard silicone cannot provide.

FKM offers superior resistance to a broad range of chemicals compared to silicone, including strong acids, alkalis, and solvents, since concentrated mineral acids such as sulfuric, hydrochloric, or nitric acid attack silicone's chemical structure over time, while FKM's fluorinated backbone remains stable under the same exposure. This makes FKM the stronger choice for H-cells running electrolytes containing high concentrations of these acids. 

FKM also holds up well against hydrocarbons and organic solvents, fuels, aromatic oils, and chlorinated solvents, environments where silicone lacks the same chemical resistance and is more prone to swelling and losing its shape under prolonged exposure. This broadens FKM's suitability beyond aqueous electrolytes into mixed or organic-solvent electrochemical systems. 

A further advantage is gas-tight retention. Silicone has notably high CO₂ permeability, making it poorly suited to gas-tight sealing, whereas fluorinated elastomers like FKM sit at the low-permeability end of the scale. This matters directly for experiments tracking gas-evolution products, such as CO₂ reduction or water electrolysis, where reduced atmospheric crossover improves the accuracy of gas quantification. 

Important limitation: FKM does not perform well with ketones (acetone, MEK), esters, aliphatic and aromatic amines, or low-molecular-weight organic acids such as concentrated acetic or formic acid, all of which cause rapid swelling and mechanical breakdown of the material. Concentrated strong bases above roughly 10% (NaOH, KOH) are also outside FKM's working range, consistent with published degradation studies in alkaline media.

For strongly alkaline electrolytes or systems involving these substances, an ePTFE gasket is the more chemically robust choice.
