Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) triphenylbenzene ligand

utilised to synthesised COFs for photocatalysis, optoelectronics and fluorescent dyes

2,2'-(5'-(4-(Cyanomethyl)phenyl)-[1,1':3',1''-terphenyl]-4,4''-diyl)diacetonitrile (CAS number 2311888-44-3), also known as 1,3,5-tris(4-cyanomethylphenyl)benzene, has a triphenylbenzene core substituted by three cyanomethyl groups. 2,2'-(5'-(4-(Cyanomethyl)phenyl)-[1,1':3',1''-terphenyl]-4,4''-diyl)diacetonitrile undergoes a Knoevenagel condensation reaction, in basic conditions, with di/trialdehyde substituted ligands to form phenylene vinylene COFs containing nitrile anchoring groups. The resulting COFs are fully conjugated and they exhibit photoluminescent quantum yield of 27% (and up to 33% with fluorinated aldehyde ligands). The nitrile anchoring groups can be further converted to carboxylic acids which can coordinate to metal centres to prepare COF-metal complexes.

The COFs synthesised from 2,2'-(5'-(4-(cyanomethyl)phenyl)-[1,1':3',1''-terphenyl]-4,4''-diyl)diacetonitrile has high crystallinity and good stability. These COFs are applied in the photocatalytic oxidation reaction, effectively converting boronic acid to alcohols under visible light.
