Highly Conductive, 3D Porous Electrode Substrate
Open-cell metal foam for alkaline electrochemical systems and aprotic batteries

Known for its three-dimensional open-cell porous metal structure, nickel foam is widely used as an electrode substrate, current collector, and catalyst support in alkaline electrochemical systems and aprotic batteries. Ni foam is fully metallic, highly conductive scaffold, and its interconnected network of pores gives it a very high surface to volume ratio, and its open porosity allows smooth gas diffusion through the electrode.
Nickel foam has a wide range of applications, it’s highly recommended for catalyst deposition in anion exchange membrane (AEM) or alkaline water electrolysis systems. Ni foam is also a go-to scaffold in nickel-based, lithium-sulfur, lithium- air, and sodium-air battery applications, and hybrid supercapacitors. Ni foam has further uses in general electrocatalysis benchmarking, as well as uses outside of electrochemistry such as filtration and heat exchange.
Our nickel foam is produced by electrodepositing nickel onto a polymer foam template, which is then burned or dissolved away and the remaining nickel skeleton sintered at high temperature. This leaves a self-supporting metallic foam that retains the open, interconnected pore structure of the original polymer template.
Important Limitation: Even though nickel is stable and widely used in alkaline an aprotic media, it corrodes readily in acidic electrolytes. If your application involves a PEM or acidic system, carbon paper, carbon cloth, or titanium-based substrate would be the better alternative instead.
Highly Porous
Typically over 90% open porosity allows smooth gas/electrolyte diffusion
Highly Conductive
Fully metallic structure gives excellent electrical conductivity
High Surface Area
Interconnected pore network increases active surface area for catalyst loading
Alkaline Stable
Well suited to alkaline and aprotic electrolytes
