(5S)-(−)-5-(Trifluoromethyl)-2-pyrrolidinone (CAS number 1287211-10-2), a derivative of the well known 2-pyrrolidinone, is a five-membered lactam (γ-lactam) with a trifluoromethyl substituent on a S-chiral carbon centre (left-handed). Many derivatives of 2-pyrrolidinone are bioactive including cotinine (antidepressant), doxapram (respirator stimulant) and seletracetam (anticonvulsant). (5S)-(−)-5-(Trifluoromethyl)-2-pyrrolidinone has a high potential for using in APIs development, due to the lipophilicity from trifluoromethyl group. The chiral centre is also preferred for systematic studies in medicinal chemistry.

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is popularly used in development of solid-state batteries, as a binder maintaining cohesion for intercalation type cathodes. PVP is easily prepared through a radical polymerisation, while its monomer vinylpyrrolidone can be obtained from pyrrolidinone and acetylene.
