UiO-66 (CAS number: 1072413-89-8) is a metal-organic framework consisting of zirconium (IV) metal centers and terephthalate (benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate, BDC) linkers.
The structure of UiO-66 possesses exceptional stability, owing to the inner Zr6O4(OH)4 cluster, where the Zr6 octahedron is capped with μ3–O and μ3–OH groups. The Zr6O4(OH)4 core has twelve coordination sites to the carboxylate linkers, forming a face-centered cubic structure. The stable structure allows UiO-66 to be used in multiple applications such as drug delivery, catalysis, and water remediation.
When UiO-66 is impregnated with palladium nanoparticles, the resulting composite catalyst exhibits high selectivity (up to 99%) for dimethyl carbonate production via direct CO esterification. In addition, UiO-66 has demonstrated strong performance in water purification, effectively adsorbing including polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), organic dyes and pharmaceutical pollutants.
