Ease your transition into slot-die coating with the Bar Coater Adapters for the Ossila Slot-Die Coater. These accessories allow you to expand the functionality of the Slot-Die Coater, while saving time and materials. Fine-tune coating parameters, validate solution properties and optimize drying conditions before you start slot-die coating.
The Contact Bar Coater Adapter has a spring-loaded mounting mechanism, allowing quick and easy loading of traditional Mayer Bars. This adapter always keeps the bar in contact with the coating surface. Fine tune your solution properties and ideal coating speed with simple bar coating methods before beginning to optimize slot die coating parameters.
The Non-Contact Bar Coater Adapter has a smooth bar that simply attaches to the slot-gantry. This combines the ease of bar coating, with height variation capabilities and a methodology closer to slot die coating. Users can optimize two critical coating parameters simultaneously: coating gap and coating speed. The non-contact system also allows you to easily clean and reset the bar between depositions, accounting for any difference in substrate thicknesses.
These adapters make transitioning to slot die coating that much easier. Combined with the Ossila Slot Die Coater, you can easily bar coat small samples, control the temperature of your stage, and also control the drying of your films using the mountable air knife.

Using The Bar Coating Adapters
Contact Bar Adapter
- Mount the Contact Bar Coater Adapter replacing the slot die head.
- Position or fix the substrate on the slot-die coater stage underneath the bar adapter.
- Pull the spring-mechanism up slightly, and position the Mayer bar in the recess.
- Deposit the solution in the coating path, in front of the coating bar.
- Enter parameters and coat.
Non-Contact Bar Adapter
- Mount the Non-Contact Bar Coater Adapter in place of the slot die head.
- Position or fix the substrate on the slot-die coater stage underneath the bar adapter.
- Lower the bar until it just makes contact with the coating surface using the slot-die coater micrometer gauges, just as you would do in slot-die coating.
- Zero the gauges then raise the bar until the target coating height is achieved.
- Deposit the solution between the bar and the substrate to create a meniscus
- Enter parameters and coat.
Deviation Between Substrate Thickness
One of the challenges in lab-scale slot-die coating is how to account for any thickness deviation between different substrates. The height of each substrate can vary slightly between batches or even within the same batch. You will therefore need to redefine coating height with each new substrate.
Our slot die coating method involves bringing the slot-die head up to the coating surface to define coating height. After a deposition, you need to clean the slot die head before repeating this process, so as not to contaminate the substrate. This can be laborious, and during process optimization this will need to be repeated and varied several times. Constant cleaning and drying greatly increases deposition time.
The Ossila Non-Contact Bar Coating Adapter solves this problem. You can optimize coating height, coating speed and estimate solution volume needed, while easily cleaning and resetting the bar after each deposition. This distinct capability compensates for substrate variation.
