Video: How to Connect Electrical Legs to Our Scale Up Substrates



This video demonstrates how to connect electrical legs to our scale up substrate system for measurement using zero insertion force (ZIF) sockets.

Attaching legs to devices enables easy and repeatable measurements. The legs can be attached by placing them on a flat surface (clip side up) and then placing the substrate vertically on the clips before gently pressing down on one corner such that they engage. Using a glass test tube, the rest of the legs can be engaged down the length of the substrate. This step can then be repeated for the other side of the substrate. Visually inspect the legs to check their alignment with the ITO as mis-alignment can cause measurement errors as more than one pixel will be active at once resulting in an artificial doubling of performance. This process can be made easier by first scraping the substrate edges with sandpaper.

Extra care should be taken when engaging the substrates in the legs and when connecting the remainder of the legs. Only gentle but firm pressure should be applied as there is the potential to break the substrate.

After the legs have been attached, the bottom and top of the legs must then be removed. This can be done with a sturdy pair of scissors while the top can be removed by holding the substrate in one hand with the thumb and fore-finger and gently bending the top until it snaps off. Recheck the alignment of the legs with the ITO as they can be moved slightly during the cutting process.

  1. You’ll need: a substrate, sandpaper, scissors, a test tube, and electrical contact legs.
  2. Cut the electrical legs into 2x segments of 25.
  3. Scrape the four edges of the substrate on the sandpaper. This will allow for easier placement of the legs.
  4. To connect the legs, place the substrate on a soft surface. Align the substrate with the legs and apply pressure at the near corner.
  5. With the first 1-2 legs fitted, flip the substrate. Apply a gentle but firm pressure with the test tube, running down the length of the substrate.
  6. Perform the same procedure with the other side of the substrate. Make sure the first 1-2 legs are secured, then apply pressure down the length of the substrate.
