4-(trans-4-Pentylcyclohexyl)benzonitrile
CAS Number 61204-01-1
4-(trans-4-Pentylcyclohexyl)benzonitrile (PCH5), liquid crystal (nematic).
Nematic liquid crystal for the application of optical electronics i.e. in liquid-crystal display (LCD)
4-(trans-4-Pentylcyclohexyl)benzonitrile (PCH5), CAS number 61204-01-1, has a structure of pentyl alkyl chain and benzonitrile groups attached to 1,4-positions of cyclohexane ring in trans-geometry, in another word, they are facing opposite directions.
4-(trans-4-Pentylcyclohexyl)benzonitrile is a rod-like liquid crystal with a nematic to isotropic phase transition at 327.6 K and a crystalline to nematic phase transition at 303 K. Nematic is one of the liquid crystal phases that molecules that have no positional order however tend to point in the same direction (along the director). The positional order of nematic liquid crystal can be cultivated by physical gelation mainly induced by the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds of gelling agents in solvents.
