P5TCN-F25 is a derivative of polythiophenes (PTs) with cyano, fluoro and alkyl groups on the main backbone of the polymer. The branched 2-hexyldecyl alkyl chains are there to promote the solubility of the polymer and backbone fluorination is believed to lead to stronger interchain interaction, improved polymer crystallinity, and appropriate miscibility with fullerene or non-fullerene acceptors. Meanwhile, the cyano-group on the thiophene ring can not only down-shift the energy levels but also improve the crystallinity of the resulting polymers.

Outstanding device performance with PCE of 17.2% was achieved by using a ternary blend of active layer materials with P5TCN-F25 as the polymer donor and mixed non-fullerene Y6 and fullerene PC71BM as the acceptors by the following device structure.
