C60 fullerene (CAS number 99685-96-8) also known as carbon-60, buckminsterfullerene or buckyball, is a prominent electron acceptor molecule composed of 60 carbons. C60 fullerene is similar to the shape of a hollow football, with 20 hexagons and 12 pentagons. The C60 molecule is unsaturated as each carbon is connected to 3 other carbons instead of 4 with fused 5 and 6 membered rings. The mixture of hexagons and pentagons gives fullerene C60 its spherical structure. The unsaturated character of C60 fullerene, with partial electron delocalization across the molecule, gives it excellent electron acceptor properties.

C60 Derivatives

C60 has been modified to enhance various properties for different applications. In particular, additional functional groups have allowed the rational tuning of HOMO and LUMO levels for use in bulk heterojunction solar cells. Modifications have also reduced the hydrophobicity of fullerene so that it can be processed in aqueous solutions. Please see some examples below:

fullerene c60 Properties of Fullerene

Fullerene C6o exhibits unique structural, chemical, electronic, and thermal properties. This is due to its highly symmetrical icosahedral structure that contains a mixture of single and double bonds. All fullerenes have partial electron sharing across the molecule and a high affinity for electrons.
