A frequent bipyridyl ligand and intermediate

Available for the synthesis of organometallic complexes, photosensitizers, and pharmaceuticals applications

5,5'-Dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (or 5,5'-Dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl), CAS number 1762-34-1, is a bipyridyl derivative with dimethyl functional groups at 5,5-positions. Dimethyl groups can be further oxidised to prepare 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid. 5,5'-Dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine is widely used as a ligand for organometallic chemical synthesis and pharmaceuticals applications.

Exhibiting high luminescence for G-quadruplex DNA, iridium(III) complex [Ir(pbi)2(5,5'-dmbpy)]PF6 is employed to construct G-quadruplex-based assay for protein tyrosine kinase-7 (PTK7) in aqueous solution. PTK7 is an important biomarker for a range of leukaemia and solid tumours. 5,5′-dimethyl -2, 2′-dipyridyl demonstrates significant activity against embryos and was capable of arresting development at a number of stages of embryogenesis.
