About Ossila

Ossila is a small but high-growth business which manufactures and supplies scientific equipment, materials, and laboratory supplies to institutions around the world. Our aim is to help accelerate the pace of scientific discovery. To do this, we are looking to continue our rapid expansion with a view to building a world-class company of significant size and stature over the next five years. Formed by academics from the University of Sheffield, we now have offices in both the UK and the Netherlands and employ over 40 people.

We pride ourselves on our high-quality products, excellent customer support, and accessible prices. Our customers can be found in over 80 countries (approximately 85% of our sales are exported) and include many of the world leading research institutions. We have won both the Institute of Physics award for innovation and a Queen’s Award for export.

Job Overview

We are looking for someone with a PhD in physics on a topic related to thin film semiconductors who enjoys laboratory work and has a passion for communicating scientific ideas and methods through written copy and the effective use of video, images, and graphics. The successful candidate will be tasked with producing search engine friendly content that brings new traffic to the website and drives product sales by helping the scientific community to solve technical problems.

The main way in which we market our products and build the strength of our brand is by helping potential and existing customers, most of whom begin their journey on a search engine. By finding and answering common queries and demonstrating solutions to deep technical problems, we can create a valuable resource for the scientific community. Properly leveraged, this can lead to an increase in customer engagement and a reduction in the number of requests for technical support, both of which will increase the amount of the impact that we can have.

The role will involve the following core responsibilities around content generation:

  • Setting up and undertaking experiments and producing practical lab-based content
  • Working with our graphic designer to plan and produce video content
  • Producing desk-based content including general introductions, theory guides, and FAQs
  • Analysing search data and monitoring customer enquiries to find and prioritise new content opportunities and devise an effective content marketing strategy
  • Assisting with recruitment, commissioning and copy-editing content from external writers
  • Publishing new content on our website in a way that is user friendly and SEO compliant

The primary objective of role is to increase sales by improving our average position in Google for relevant keywords to increase the number of website entrances and product page views.

The role is for an initial one-year period and is based on-site in our new open plan office and manufacturing space at our main location in Sheffield. The successful candidate will work closely with our in-house website and marketing team, as well as with our team of chemists, product engineers, and external collaborators.

Essential requirements

We are looking for someone with a PhD in physics who is interested in producing scientific content for an exciting, fast-growing company with head offices in Sheffield. The successful candidate will be a great communicator and an excellent writer.

Candidates must have the following specific traits:

  • A PhD in physics or significant scientific experience
  • Experience writing scientific content and strong knowledge of scientific communications
  • Ability to self-organise and manage projects efficiently with minimal need for supervision
  • Demonstratable experience working competently and safely in a lab environment
  • Excellent English with an ability to copy-edit their own work to a high standard
  • Excellent IT skills and the ability to create high-quality digital content

A working understanding of basic web technologies such as HTML would be beneficial. Experience in search engine optimisation is not required as training will be provided.

Broad knowledge of fabrication and measurement techniques is more important than specific end applications (such as OPVs, Perovskites, OLEDs, or OFETs). However, one or more of the following technical skills would be advantageous:

  • Device fabrication experience
  • Thin-film coating experience and surface metrology
  • Spectroscopy and material characterisation
  • Electrical characterisation and measurements

In addition, we are also looking for the below soft skills:

  • Fantastic teamwork and collaboration skills
  • Excellent prioritisation and time management skills
  • Strong desire for continuous learning and self-improvement
  • Adaptability, resourcefulness, and an aptitude for problem solving
  • Highly organised and self-motivated

The ideal candidate will be highly organised, with the ability to work on several concurrent projects with different deadlines at the same time. As a small and fast-growing company, we are looking for someone who can work effectively as part of a team in a busy office, but the successful candidate must also be willing to work under their own initiative and take responsibility to solve problems when required.
