Jobs in Sheffield

Location: Windsor Street, Sheffield

Employment Type: Full-time

Hours: 35 hours per week (nominally 9am - 5pm)

Term: Permanent

Salary: £24000 - £28000 per annum

Deadline: Tuesday, Jan 24, 2023 (with rolling interviews as good applications are received)

Start Date: As soon as possible

We are looking for a confident content writer and editor to join our SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and content marketing team. The successful candidate will help produce engaging content that not only brings new traffic to the website, but also drives product sales.

The content on our website not only needs to be user-friendly, but must also meet commercial SEO endpoints. High quality writing skills coupled with commercial SEO knowledge and experience would therefore be ideal, but we will also consider candidates who excel on the writing side and are looking to challenge themselves.

The role will ultimately involve the following core activities:

  • Reviewing and revising technical and transactional content with a view to improving the readability, overall quality, and usefulness of our written resources and product pages
  • Writing effective marketing copy for use on our website and for award entries and digital PR
  • Helping to recruit external writers on a contract basis and subsequently plan, commission, copyedit content before publishing it on our website
  • Learning to perform keyword research and analyse web data to look for weaknesses and opportunities and create a content roadmap capable of fuelling significant growth

The primary objective of this hire is to increase sales. Improving our average position in Google for relevant keywords and increasing the number of website entrances and product page views will allow more potential customers to evaluate our niche technical products and determine how these fit with their research and development aims.

The SEO Content Writer and Editor will be an integral part of our marketing team and will play a vital role as we scale-up our traffic acquisition strategy with a view to creating, in effect, a small but highly efficient internal publishing house. Based on-site in our new open plan office and manufacturing space, the successful applicant will work in close collaboration with our scientific content writers (including external collaborators), existing SEO staff, and graphic designers.

This is a great opportunity for someone with a strong attention to detail, who enjoys working in a team and is confident in their writing ability. SEO training will be provided, but prior SEO or HTML knowledge (especially commercial SEO experience) would be advantageous. A background in science is not necessary, but candidates should be confident in their ability to read and rephrase technical writing while maintaining accuracy.

Essential Requirements

The SEO Content Writer and Editor will write non-technical content, and edit technical content predominantly aimed at an international audience of scientists and engineers. Readability is key, so an appreciation of good sentence structure, vocabulary, voice, and grammar is essential. Our scientific resource pages can be very technical and so it is essential that our copyeditor can interpret complex language and ideas and simplify these appropriately to improve the clarity of our text.

Candidates must have the following specifics:

  • A degree in an essay writing subject (such as English, politics, or history) or extensive writing experience
  • Strong and demonstratable writing and comprehension ability
  • Ability to follow and, where necessary, set style guidelines
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent time management and a high level of personal organisation
  • Ability to engage with and build good working relationships with a wide range of people
  • Methodical and diligent work ethic
  • Either commercial SEO experience or a passion for self-development in this area

We are also looking for the below soft skills:

  • Fantastic teamwork and collaboration skills
  • Strong desire for continuous learning and self-improvement
  • Adaptability, resourcefulness, and an aptitude for problem solving
  • Highly organised and self-motivated

Additionally, candidates must be able to reliably commute to Attercliffe, Sheffield, and want to work in a busy, professional environment.

Job Overview

We are looking for an engineering graduate specialising in control systems engineering or mechatronics to join one of our product developments teams and work on developing and improving upon our current range of processing equipment.

The processing equipment team focuses on developing equipment which is vital for the fabrication and processing of samples for scientific research. Many of our products have been focused upon equipment used for fabricating wet thin films for thin-film electronic devices and various disciplines of nanotechnology. These products require precision control of linear and rotational motion.

Recently we have begun to develop new products for process environment control including inert atmosphere glove boxes and laminar flow hoods. These have allowed us to widen our areas of expertise into the use of pneumatic control and a wide variety of environmental sensors including trace gas sensors, motion sensors, and particulate counters.

As part of our company roadmap, we are looking to recruit positions to ensure continuous growth and improved profitability over the next few years. As part of this, we are looking to recruit engineers to speed up our product development pipeline, improve the features available on current products, undertake cost optimisation of stable products, and provide a range of variants of current products to suit our varied customer base.

The position will be part of our processing equipment product development team where you will be backfilling the responsibilities for maintaining and improving currently available products from our senior engineers. This will include responsibilities such as maintaining and updating firmware, optimizing current designs for improved manufacturing and cost reductions, development of new features, and releasing of new variants of current products. The aim of this will be to constantly improve reliability of equipment, reduce the cost for our users, and to provide a wider range of features which can be used by them.

The successful candidate will initially be trained on our precision motion control equipment including spin coater, syringe pumps, dip coater, and slot-die coater. The candidate will then work closely with our manufacturing team, our senior engineers, and our research scientists to enact a series of continuous improvements upon these products.

The role will involve the following core responsibilities around the maintenance and development of the products they will be responsible for:

  • Providing support for the manufacturing team when issues arise.
  • Enact cost optimization of current products.
  • Failure analysis of defective products and implementation of necessary changes to products.
  • Updating legacy firmware to a new modular architecture.
  • Releasing new features for products.
  • Developing new variants of products.

Essential Requirements

We are looking for someone who would be excited to take responsibility for a range of products and look to continually improve upon every aspect of these products. The candidate should have the following:

  • A degree in engineering, preferably with focus on control systems and/or mechatronics
  • Solid experience of programming with C and C++ for embedded systems
  • Understanding of electronic circuit design and the use of EDA software such as EAGLE
  • Practical skills with electronics prototyping including soldering, use of oscilloscopes, etc.
  • Knowledge of the design of mechanical systems and use of CAD software such as Solidworks
  • Proven desire for continuous learning and development.

In addition, the following requirements would be beneficial but not essential:

  • Experience with ARM Cortex processors
  • Knowledge of some of the following protocols/interfaces: I2C, SPI, USB
  • Understanding of control loop systems such as: Open Loop, PID, Feedforward Control
  • Fantastic teamwork and collaboration skills
  • Adaptability, resourcefulness, and an aptitude for problem solving

The ideal candidate will be highly organised, with the ability to work on several concurrent tasks with different deadlines at the same time and re-prioritise as new tasks come in with minimal need for supervision. As a small and fast-growing company, we are looking for someone who can work effectively as part of a team in a busy environment, but the successful candidate must also be willing to work under their own initiative and take responsibility to solve problems when required.

Our Locations

One of the things that makes Ossila unique is that we serve a large international customer from two geographical locations, one in the UK and one in the EU.

Sheffield, UK

Our UK location is based in the manufacturing heartland of the country, Sheffield. We can be found in the Solpro Business Park at Royds Mills in Attercliffe in a former steelworks in the historical industrial suburb of the city.

Sheffield is where our roots are as a company. Founded by academics from the University of Sheffield, we were previously based in the Kroto Innovation Centre. A period of rapid and ongoing expansion, however, meant that we needed a new space that we could transform into headquarters befitting a global organisation. Our Attercliffe site is relatively unique; few organisations have been able to co-locate their offices, distribution centre, manufacturing floor, and a fully equipped chemical laboratory.

Our headquarters are easily accessible from the M1 via the Sheffield parkway and from Sheffield train station via the number 52 bus service. We are also only a short walk away from Woodbourn Road and Attercliffe tram stops. By car, we are:

  • 10 minutes from Sheffield city centre
  • 15 minutes from Rotherham
  • 30 minutes from Doncaster
  • 30 minutes from Chesterfield
  • 50 minutes from Leeds
  • 60 minutes from Nottingham
  • 60 minutes from Derby
  • 90 minutes from Manchester

On-site parking is free, and we have cycling facilities including a shower and secure storage.

The main entrance to Solpro Business Park is on Windsor Street, just off Attercliffe Road (there is no access from Princess Street). Our reception can be found in the Northern Block of the business park at the end of Windsor Street.

Ossila Office Directions & Map

Leiden, the Netherlands

Our newest location is based in Leiden, the ‘city of discoveries’, and home to the oldest university in the Netherlands. Arguably the scientific capital of Europe, Leiden University has produced thirteen Nobel Prize winners.

We can be found alongside over 160 other companies working in the scientific sector in the BioParter Center in Leiden BioScience Park. The Ossila office here is the operational centre of Ossila BV, our wholly owned EU subsidiary. Our Netherlands team provide customer support to our EU customers and handle order fulfilment for all orders placed via Ossila BV.

Leiden BioScience Park is less than 20 minutes by foot from Leiden Centraal, which provides easy access to the rest of the Netherlands. Excellent train connections mean that Leiden is:

  • 10 minutes from The Hauge
  • 30 minutes from Rotterdam
  • 20 minutes from Amsterdam and Schiphol International Airport

The BioParter Center itself has covered bike parking and a range of useful facilities.
