Job Overview

We are looking for an engineering graduate specialising in control systems engineering or mechatronics to join one of our product developments teams and work on developing and improving upon our current range of processing equipment.

The processing equipment team focuses on developing equipment which is vital for the fabrication and processing of samples for scientific research. Many of our products have been focused upon equipment used for fabricating wet thin films for thin-film electronic devices and various disciplines of nanotechnology. These products require precision control of linear and rotational motion.

Recently, we have begun to develop new products for process environment control including inert atmosphere glove boxes and laminar flow hoods. These have allowed us to widen our areas of expertise into the use of pneumatic control and a wide variety of environmental sensors including trace gas sensors, motion sensors, and particulate counters.

As part of our company roadmap, we are looking to recruit positions to ensure continuous growth and improved profitability over the next few years. As part of this, we are looking to recruit engineers to speed up our product development pipeline, improve the features available on current products, undertake cost optimisation of stable products, and provide a range of variants of current products to suit our varied customer base.

The position will be part of our processing equipment product development team where you will be backfilling the responsibilities for maintaining and improving currently available products from our senior engineers. This will include responsibilities such as maintaining and updating firmware, optimizing current designs for improved manufacturing and cost reductions, development of new features, and releasing of new variants of current products. The aim of this will be to constantly improve reliability of equipment, reduce the cost for our users, and to provide a wider range of features which can be used by them.

The successful candidate will initially be trained on our precision motion control equipment including spin coater, syringe pumps, dip coater, and slot-die coater. The candidate will then work closely with our manufacturing team, our senior engineers, and our research scientists to enact a series of continuous improvements upon these products.

The role will involve the following core responsibilities around the maintenance and development of the products they will be responsible for:

  • Providing support for the manufacturing team when issues arise.
  • Enact cost optimization of current products.
  • Failure analysis of defective products and implementation of necessary changes to products.
  • Updating legacy firmware to a new modular architecture.
  • Releasing new features for products.
  • Developing new variants of products.

Essential Requirements

We are looking for someone who would be excited to take responsibility for a range of products and look to continually improve upon every aspect of these products. The candidate should have the following:

  • A degree in engineering, preferably with focus on control systems and/or mechatronic
  • Solid experience of programming with C and C++ for embedded systems
  • Understanding of electronic circuit design and the use of EDA software such as EAGLE
  • Practical skills with electronics prototyping including soldering, use of oscilloscopes, etc.
  • Knowledge of the design of mechanical systems and use of CAD software such as Solidworks

Job Overview

For over a decade, Ossila has been a major supplier of high-quality polymer and small molecule semiconducting materials to our customers worldwide. Traditionally, our materials catalogue has been focussed on the end-users, primarily physicists and engineers, however we are seeing increased demand for intermediates and building blocks from research chemists performing synthesis.

We are therefore expanding our catalogue of building blocks and intermediates for organic chemists to meet greater demand from our customers and are looking for someone to help us develop and manage a range of traded products to supplement our synthesised materials.

The candidate will be expected to develop and manage full categories of chemicals and materials for use in chemical synthesis labs including intermediates and building blocks, electronic and energy materials. A great part of your time will be devoted in sourcing and creating product pages, safety data sheets and quality assurance sheets to make them available to our customers.

The role will involve the following core responsibilities:

  • To identify and work with chemical suppliers and distributors and source chemicals with great quality and competitive prices
  • To create chemical product pages and to build up categories of chemicals
  • To keep chemical inventory, hazard association and stock management

Job Overview

The electronic technician will be responsible for testing, calibrating, fault finding and re-work of the PCB assemblies at the heart of our lab equipment ranges including:

  • Inspection of incoming PCB assemblies from our suppliers and creating reports on any defective boards.
  • Calibration and testing of PCB assemblies in accordance with Ossila’s set test procedures.
  • Maintain stock levels of both PCB assemblies and associated electronic components in order to meet wider production demand.
  • Maintain records of inspection reports, calibration data and stock flows.
  • Designing, building, and maintaining rigs for testing PCB assemblies and other production items.
  • Supporting Engineering and Manufacturing in fault finding PCB assemblies to component level.

We are looking for someone to join our team of international trade experts to help facilitate our sales of renewable energy and materials-science related products to over 90 countries around the world. You will learn the details of international trade including tax, delivery incoterms, customs formalities, shipping, and how to ensure sanctions compliance. Daily activities will include responding to customer enquiries with quotes, assisting with general enquiries, processing customer orders as well as helping to prepare, dispatch and assist with the delivery of goods to around the world.

The role involves working as part of the International Customer Support team, who are main point of contact for our client base of universities and blue-chip research institutions around the world. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal are therefore essential.

Duties undertaken by the International Trade Customer Service Administrator will include working with our customer relationship management (CRM) system as well as other IT systems to:

One of the things that makes Ossila unique is that we serve a large international customer from two geographical locations, one in the UK and one in the EU.

Sheffield, UK

Our UK location is based in the manufacturing heartland of the country, Sheffield. We can be found in the Solpro Business Park at Royds Mills in Attercliffe in a former steelworks in the historical industrial suburb of the city.

Sheffield is where our roots are as a company. Founded by academics from the University of Sheffield, we were previously based in the Kroto Innovation Centre. A period of rapid and ongoing expansion, however, meant that we needed a new space that we could transform into headquarters befitting a global organisation. Our Attercliffe site is relatively unique; few organisations have been able to co-locate their offices, distribution centre, manufacturing floor, and a fully equipped chemical laboratory.

Our headquarters are easily accessible from the M1 via the Sheffield parkway and from Sheffield train station via the number 52 bus service. We are also only a short walk away from Woodbourn Road and Attercliffe tram stops. By car, we are:

Our newest location is based in Leiden, the ‘city of discoveries’, and home to the oldest university in the Netherlands. Arguably the scientific capital of Europe, Leiden University has produced thirteen Nobel Prize winners.

We can be found alongside over 160 other companies working in the scientific sector in the BioParter Center in Leiden BioScience Park. The Ossila office here is the operational centre of Ossila BV, our wholly owned EU subsidiary.
