L8-ThCl is a non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) with a similar structure to L8-BO, both containing a fused thienothienopyrrolo-thienothienoindole (TTP-TTI) core. The difference is that L8-ThCl is end-capped with chlorine-substituted thiophene (2-(1-chloro-6-oxo-5,6-dihydro-4H-cyclopenta[c]thiophen-4-ylidene)malononitrile (CPTCN-Cl). The chlorinated thienyl end groups show good compatibility with L8-BO with stronger induced intermolecular interaction, leading to narrowed full-width-at-half-maxima (FWHM) at its (0-0) absorption peak in film. 

L8-ThCl also has slightly elevated HOMO/LUMO energy levels while comparing them with those of L8-BO, showing reduced energy loss and better alignment of energy levels with most of semiconducting polymer donors. Power conversion efficiency of 19.4% and 20.1% were recorded for polymer organic solar cells based on PM6:20 wt% L8-ThCl/L8-BO:20 wt% L8-ThCl and D18:20 wt% L8-ThCl/L8-BO:20 wt% L8-ThCl ternary active layers.
