The PhD student will be expected to explore electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical characterisation of exciplex layers for application in OLED devices.

ESR2. Characterisation of charge carriers and conductivity of an exciplex layer in comparison to pure materials

This project explores the generation mechanism of charge carriers in exciplex layers. To define the role, and influence of the ratio between donor, acceptor and ambipolar compounds on the exciplex layer and its properties. To train ESR2 in materials science and OLED applications within the rapidly growing academic research and industry-based technological applications and in the application of modern techniques, such as electron photoemis-sion, time-of-flight etc., for characterisation of organic electroactive materials.

ESR3. Donor-acceptor 2-D star-shaped conjugated macromolecules based on truxene and similar cores

The PhD student will be tasked with the synthesis of new star-shaped conjugated molecules featuring a central core for the attachment of three or more conjugated ‘arms’, a combination of electron-rich and electron-deficient conjugated arms, as so-called ‘donor-acceptor’ components. The student will optimise synthetic routes for leading materials so that gram quantities of final target products can be made routinely.

ESR4. Cruciforms and dendralenes as cross-conjugated, orthogonal structures for optimised thermally assisted delayed fluorescence

The PhD student will synthesise new orthogonal cross-conjugated molecules featuring a cruciform-type core for the attachment of two conjugated oligomer chains. Materials will feature a combination of one electron-rich and one electron-deficient conjugated arm, in which the two components are positioned orthogonally to each other and, in the case of the dendralene structures, conformationally tunable materials that will provide greater control of the charge transfer energy states. The student will optimise synthetic routes for lead materials so that gram quantities of final target products can be made routinely.

ESR5. Design, synthesis, and characterisation of electroactive compounds with electron-donor chromophores and/or multichromphoric structures for light-emitting exciplexes

The PhD student will develop new knowledge on the design of new structures of the conjugated compounds with electron-donor chromophores and/or multichromophoric compounds using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and other theoretical tools. This includes the development of the optimal synthetic schemes for the compounds with electron-donor chromophores and in the advanced method of the synthesis and purification of organic electroactive materials. Screening of the new electroactive compounds for the ability to form exciplexes .

ESR7. Synthesis of novel conjugated fluorescent electron-acceptor derivatives

The PhD student will design and synthesise new tetrazines which are both conjugated, but also sufficiently electrodeficient to be luminescent. To understand the relation between the absorption by a conjugated system and the tetrazine emission, which is localised on the n-π* transition. This work is in the novel fields of heterocyclic synthetic chemistry.

ESR8. Spectroscopic characterisation of tetrazine derivatives and their exciplex blends

The PhD student will study the photophysical properties (absorption and emission spectroscopy, photoluminescence quantum yield) of new materials and exciplex layers. To train the ESR in electrochemical characterisation of materials to obtain HOMO and LUMO energy levels. To training of ESRs on the modification of organic molecules to gain an optimally designed structure.

ESR9. Adaptation of inkjet printing technique for OLED fabrication

The PhD student will acquire the knowledge and experience in the processing of organic light emitting layers. To acquire the knowledge in inkjet printing technology and principles of ink formulation. To train in the control of drop for-mation processes by jetting nozzles, deposition of the droplets on different types of substrates or previously deposited materials by the inkjet printing technique.

ESR10. Laboratory fabrication of OLEDs and determination of exciplex morphology on device work parameters

To gain knowledge and experience in the principles of operation and fabrication of exciplex based organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) using commercial materials. To learn the selection of materials for construction of OLEDs in single- and multilayer configurations. This also includes the fabrication of OLEDs in air in clean room conditions and under inert gas conditions in a glove box.

ESR11. Development of multicolour exciplex OLEDs for lighting applications

The PhD student will characterise and model the emission layers containing multiple exciplex emitters. To gain an understanding through spectroscopy of the possible interactions and their spatial dependency between different, closely packed, exciplex states. To design new device architectures for multi-exciplex broadband emitting devices. To produce design rules for simple white exciplex OLEDs with high efficiency. To determine the anisotropy of emission in the devices and the effect on the device’s light outcoupling.

ESR12. Spectroscopic Characterisation of Donor-Acceptor Materials in Exciplex layers

The PhD student will characterise novel thermally assisted delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials in solution and solid phases. To understand the role of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) on the observation of efficient TADF in well-dispersed (isolated) organic materials. This includes the characterisation of organic materials using steady-state and time resolved spectroscopy methods, and on using this information to better tailoring TADF based devices.

ESR14. Lifetime & degradation of exciplex OLEDs

The PhD student will quantify the operational lifetime of exciplex based OLEDs relative to normal (EL/phosphorescent OLEDs). To isolate any degradation mechanisms that are specific to exciplex based devices and investigate how these may be mitigated. To produce leading edge metrics in operational lifetime using solution processed techniques (target 10,000 hours lifetime).
