Nickel Phosphorus Trisulfide (NiPS3) Powder and Crystal
Low price, high purity 2D nickel phosphorus trisulfide powder and crystal
For the development of next-generation electronics, optoelectronics, and nanotechnology
Nickel phosphorus trisulfide (NiPS3) is a layered quasi-two dimensional antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconductor (TN=155 K). Nickel phosphorus trisulfide (NiPS3) belongs to the group of 2D layered transition metal phosphorus trichalcogenides (MPX3). Among them, NiPS3 has quite unique physical properties with capability of both p-type and n-type doping for device applications and the smallest bandgap energy (~1.6 eV).
The antiferromagnetic ordering in NiPS3 is persistent down to two-layer nano-structures and is substantially suppressed in the monolayer, unlike the case of Ising-type antiferromagnet FePS3 in which antiferromagnetic ordering maintains down to the monolayer limit. Antiferromagnetic van der Waals material NiPS3 offers a good model system for the XY Hamiltonian or XXZ-type, while FePS3 of anistropic Ising-type and MnPS3 of isotropic Heisenberg-type.

Structure of Nickel Phosphorus Trisulfide
NiPS3 crystalises in monoclinic crystal structure containing two molecular formula units per unit cell (Ni2P2S6). NiPS3 consists of layers of covalently bonded clusters of [P2Se6]4-dumbbell bipyramids with honeycomb arrangement of divalent nickel ions. Individual layers are bound via weak van der Waals and can be easily separated into few-layer nanosheets by either mechanical or liquid exfoliation.

Properties of Nickel Phosphorus Trisulfide
After exfoliation of nickel phosphorus trisulfide crystal or powder, NiPS3 typically has the following properties:
- Monoclinic (space group: C2/m)
- Transition metal phosphorus trichalcogenides (MPX3)
- NiPS3 offers a good model system for the XY Hamiltonian or XXZ-type
- NiPS3 is a layered quasi-two dimensional antiferromagnetic semiconductor (TN=155 K)
- The antiferromagnetic ordering in NiPS3 is persistent down to bilayer and substantially suppressed in the monolayer,
Applications of Nicklel Phosphorus Trisulfide
Nickel phosphorus trisulfide (NiPS3) single crystals can be used to prepare monolayer and few-layer NiPS3 by mechanical or liquid exfoliation.
Nickel phosphorus trisulfide is suitable for liquid chemical exfoliation to prepare NiPS3 nanosheets and nanoparticles down to few-layer films.
Nickel phosphorus trisulfide exhibits n-type semiconducting behaviour with on/off ratio of 103–105. NiPS3 nanosheets can be built into humidity sensors, FETs, modulators, switches and health and environmental monitoring devices.
Ultrathin few-layer nickel phosphorus trisulfide nanosheets has great potentials as anodes for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) with excellent electrochemical properties in terms of stable cycling performance and rate capabilities
With appropriate positions of the band edges, NiPS3 can directly generate hydrogen gas from pure water without any sacrificial agents under sunlight. NiPS3 nanosheets is also being explored as electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with outstanding long-term durability.
