Low price, high purity 2D manganese phosphorus trisulfide powder and crystal
For the development of next-generation electronics, optoelectronics, and nanotechnology
Manganese phosphorus trisulfide (MnPS3), CAS number 20642-09-5, is a layered quasi-two-dimensional Heisenberg type antiferromagnet with a Néel temperature TN of 78 K. MnPS3 has a monoclinic structure with the pace group C2/m.
MnPS3 shows a typical antiferromagnetic behaviour with an isotropic trend, while an anisotropic behavior was observed in FePS3 for both perpendicular and parallel polarisations at the given energy range. The magnetic structure of MnPS3 consists of Mn ions coupled antiferromagnetically to their three neighbouring atoms in the layer, and inter-layer coupling of spins is also antiferromagnetic. The direction of the magnetic moment in the ordered state is perpendicular to the ab plane. MnPS3 has Heisenberg-type antiferromagnetic order, while NiPS3 by the anisotropic Heisenberg model and FePS3 is best described by the Ising model. Raman spectroscopy studies show that the Heisenberg-type antiferromagnet MnPS3 can still host magnetic ordering down to bilayers.

Structure of Manganese Phosphorus Trisulfide
Manganese phosphorus trisulfide (MnPS3) has a layered structure like black phosphorus (BP) and the different layers are held together by weak van der Waals force. In each layer, the magnetic Mn2+ ions from a honeycomb lattice and each of them is octahedrally coordinated to six S atoms to form its three neighbouring dumbbell-shaped structure [P2S6]4- clusters, with P-P groups occupying the the centres of the hexagons.
Properties of Manganese Phosphorus Trisulfide
After exfoliation of manganese phosphorus trisulfide crystal or powder, MnPS3 typically has the following properties:
- Monoclinic (space group: C2/m)
- Transition metal phosphorus trichalcogenides (MPX3)
- Heisenberg type antiferromagnet with an isotropic trend and a Néel temperature TN of 78 K
- MnPS3 can still host magnetic ordering down to bilayers
- MnPS3 is a highly resistive broad band semiconductor with a gap close to 3 eV
Applications of Manganese Phosphorus Trisulfide
Manganese phosphorus trisulfide (MnPS3) single crystals can be used to prepare monolayer and few-layer MnPS3 by mechanical or liquid exfoliation.
Manganese phosphorus trisulfide is suitable for liquid chemical exfoliation to prepare MnPS3 nanosheets and nanoparticles down to few-layer films.
Manganese phosphorus trisulfide could be used as a photocatalyst for water splitting, with the position of its band edges, strong absorption in visible light spectrum, broad applicability (pH = 0 – 7) and high carrier mobility.
With its rather unique photophysical and electrical properties, manganese phosphorus trisulfide could potentially be used for field-effect transistors, magnetic tunnel junction and spintronics devices.

What is spintronics? Spintronics is the study of the intrinsic spin of the electron and its associated magnetic moment. Spintronics measurement does not relies on electrons' charge, but on another of their fundamental quantum-mechanical properties, spin.
