One Year Under Real-World Conditions - OPV Lifetime Study Published by EPMM and Ossila

Congratulations to the team behind the joint EPMM and Ossila paper entitled ‘PCDTBT based solar cells: one year of operation under real-world conditions that has recently been published in Nature Scientific Reports. This paper presents measurements of the extended lifetime study of the outdoor stability of bulk heterojunction organic solar cells (September 2014 - September 2015), with devices located in Sheffield, England.

One of the major findings was that the lifetime of the PCDTBT:PC71BM based OPVs was limited by thermally-induced stress between the device layers, as well as degradation as a result of edge-ingress of moisture through the encapsulation. This was heavily influenced by the large temperature fluctuations that are not observed under well-controlled lab conditions.

Devices were built upon glass substrates with pre-patterned ITO, which was purchased from Ossila Limited. PCDTBT was synthesised by Hunan Yi, who is now working at Ossila Limited. PEDOT:PSS (Clevios AI 4083) and PC71BM were also purchased from Ossila Limited. Statistical lifetime data collection was enabled by the Ossila Lifetime Multiplexor System that allows for the measurement of multiple devices simultaneously.
