Two new transition metal dichalcogenides, molybdenum disulfide and tungsten disulfide, have now been added to our 2D materials collection of  powders and suspensions. At Ossila, both of these materials are available in powder forms for depositing monolayer and multilayers as well as pre-made suspensions to enable quick and easy deposition!

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is arguably the most popular member of the single-layer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) family. MoSand its class of materials are similar to graphene in their nature, as they are both 2-D materials that have properties significantly different from their bulk properties.

The most striking change that occurs when MoS2 transitions from bulk to single-layer is the shift in its optoelectronic properties. The material changes from being an indirect band-gap semiconductor (with a band-gap value of approximately 1.3 eV), to a direct band-gap semiconductor (with a band-gap value of approximately 1.9 eV). Due to the presence of a band-gap in this material, there are significantly more uses for MoS2 in comparison to other 2-D materials (e.g. graphene).

Tungsten Disulfide (WS2)

Tungsten Disulfide (WS2) also belongs to the family of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Like graphite and MoS2, when WStransitions from a bulk structure to a single layer structure, the properties of this material undergo a significant change: the indirect band gap of 1.4 eV changes to a direct band-gap of 2 eV when transitioning from a bulk material to a 2-D material. Due to its unique properties, WS2 is currently one of the most-researched TMDs in the literature.
